This Winter season (2017-18) CYA offers a house recreational program for players from 1st through 12th grade; CYA also offers a travel program through the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League (generally for players in 4th to 8th grade). Games for the Travel and House programs begin in December and run through mid-March. Practice for the Travel program begins mid October. House practices began November 15-22 for grades 1-8; practices for grades 9-10 begin December 2nd (grades 11-12 have only 1 practice, December 2nd, before the season starts with only games there after). Games for all age groups begin the weeked on December 2-3
Online registration for the Winter House program opened on September 13th and has closed for all grades. Registration fees are $170.00 for grades 2-8, $185.00 for grades 9-12, and $125.00 for grade 1. Incorporated into these registration fees is a $20 CYA admininstrative fee, a $10 fee for the CYA indoor facilities capital improvement fund, and the $8.00 Fairfax County user fee (to repeat, these fees are included in the registration fees listed above). Non-county residents pay an additional $30.00 as the Fairfax County user fee for non-residents is $38.00. For the travel registration fees, see below. A late fee of $25 was applied to grades 1-8 registrations after 10/15 and to grades 9-12 registrations after 11/26. .For grades 3-8, all registrants were placed on teams provided they registered by 11/3; after 11/3 they were placed on a wait list and placed on teams only if space existed in the individual league (for example, 4th grade boys) Grades 1 and 2 were permitted to join teams if room was available, up to 10 players per team.
HOUSE RECREATIONAL PROGRAM
The 1st grade program is strictly instructional, emphasizing skill development and basic understanding of the game. In 2nd and 3rd grades, players are given the opportunity to test their skills in games that continue to focus more on instruction than competition. In 2nd grade scores are erased after each quarter of each game where as in 3rd grade, the scores are erased after half time and end of game. (Note: no league standings are kept in 2nd and 3rd grades) The 4th through 12th grade house leagues are progressively competitive leagues, though with a great deal of emphasis placed on continuing skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship. House teams for all grades play at Chantilly area gyms, with the exception of high school girls. Since the high school girls participate in a Friendship League with neighboring programs, they may play some of their games at gyms in Vienna, Fairfax, Burke and Annandale.
Skills assessments (to assist in the player drafts) for Grades 3-8 are held -November 4th through 10th (grades 1-2 are assigned to teams by school and neighborhood). The schedule for these skills assessments will be posted in late October. During the Winter season, teams in grades 2-10 play one game and hold one 1-hour practice per week from December through February. Girls and Boys Grades 11-12 play 1-2 games on weekends but do not hold weekly practices. Tournaments for grades 4-12 are held starting beginning of March.
SKILLS ASSESSMENTS: Girls Grades 9-12 and Boys Grades 9-12 do not hold skills assessments; teams are assigned through a draft process for the boys leagues, and by the league admin/coaches for the girls leagues. Grades 1-2 do not hold skills assessments as players are assigned to teams based on schools and neighborhoods.
