CYA Rugby ends its inaugural season with two PRUYL championships (August 2006)
On August 6, 2006 in Bowie, MD, CYA’s U13 tackle rugby squad and U15 tackle rugby squad swept the PRUYL championship tournament. Both teams brought home their respective 2006 divisional championship to Chantilly. Overall, in the tournament, the U13s went 4-0 and the U15s went 3-0.
The matches were extremely physical and hard-fought. The U13 squad won their championship match decisively vs. Springfield (SYC) - a long-established youth rugby program. The U15 squad (with select SYA players) narrowly defeated a combined SYC/Vienna squad in the most physical match of the day. The size advantage went clearly to SYC/Vienna. Good preparation and teamwork enabled Chantilly to overcome the size deficit and take the victory with the only try (similar to a touchdown in football) of the game coming in the last seconds of the defense-dominated struggle.
The previous day, the U11 touch rugby squad fought hard, but came up short in the tournament, losing their two matches against older and more mature teams, but showing real heart and dedication all season long.
I have received a lot of credits for the success of the CYA Rugby inaugural season but nothing could have been done without you. I would like to thank coaches Paul Unterklofer, Bob Gaskins, John Cipriani, Tom Sullivan, and Roger Myers for building such a successful program. Without them, nothing would have happened. A special thanks also to Carla Unterklofer for taking care of the jerseys.
See you all next summer!!!!
