2008 CAPITAL AREA WRESTLING LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS
2008 DUAL MEET RESULTS
Virginia Elementary and Middle School State Championships
January 5-6, 2008 in Hampton, VA

7 Chargers Compete at the Virginia Elementary & Middle School State Championships-  2 place

Winners!!

Seven Chargers traveled to Hampton, Virginia to compete in the Virginia Elementary & Middle School State Championships, January 5-6.  The Chargers faced some of the toughest competition that we’ve wrestled against since we began our program four years ago!  Close to 800 wrestlers from Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia participated in the tournament.  Most weight classes had over 25 wrestlers competing-  with medals being awarded to the top 8 finishers at each weight.

Chargers competing in the tournaments were:

  • Joe Cronin- Elementary, 55 pounds
  • Reaves Arnold- Elementary, 55 pounds
  • Doug Newcomb- Elementary, 80 pounds
  • Logan Barr-  Elementary, 115 pounds
  • Ryland Arnold- Middle School 85 pounds
  • Sam Cronin- Middle School 122 pounds
  • Aaron Palmer- Middle School, Heavyweight

These wrestlers showed the best of Charger Wrestling in the way they competed.  Each should be proud of their showing at this tournament.  Ryland Arnold and Sam Cronin reached the consolation quarter finals before being eliminated.  Doug Newcomb and Aaron Palmer reached the quarter finals before being beaten by eventual finalists in their weight classes.  Newcomb finished 4th in the Elementary School 80 pound class and Palmer took 3rd in the Middle School Heavyweight Division.

Charger Aaron Palmer tood 3d place at HWT and qualified to compete as a member of the VA Team in the Virginia Duals.

Doug Newcomb placed 4th in the Elementary School 80 pound division.

Our CAWL Team is called -  The Chantilly Chargers.  When we’re referring to our CAWL team, we’re going to say either CAWL, Beltway, or Chargers.

Make a big deal out of being selected to practice and compete with this group.  Your wrestler should be proud of being selected to wrestle with the Chargers.  We have selected the best wrestlers in the CYA program to compete with the Chantilly Chargers.  This program will do more to prepare them for competition in high school that anything CYA wrestling has done in the past four years.  We expect these wrestlers to work harder than the rest of the CYA wrestlers-  to totally embody the ethic Work Hard, Set Goals, Believe in Yourself, and Wrestle to Win.

Competition:  Works very much like high school, wrestlers will wrestle in their weight class.  Age is somewhat different in the CAWL-  there are age limits on the different weights.  For example, a 85 pounder must be 13 years old or younger.  That means a 10 year old can wrestle kids that are up to 3 years older.  That sounds like a big thing, and it is.  But you also have to remember that many of your wrestlers wrestled “up” a division in the NVWF last year to get more matches.  They wrestled older boys then too.

Cutting Weight:  We don’t want our kids cutting weight- for health and reliability (we want to make sure the kid makes weight every time).  The weights I’ve got kids listed below are not final.  If a kid goes up or down naturally during the course of the season, that’s fine.  I’m going to bump the weights that I took in practice against this proposed lineup and make adjustments.  Ideally, we’ll put kids in the next higher weight so they don’t have to cut weight.  In other words, we’ll have a kid who weighs 77 pounds wrestle in the 80 pound class, etc.

More than one kid at a weight:  We have to have the best kids in our program practicing together.  It will make them stronger as individuals and as a team.  At many CAWL events, we can have more than one kid at a weight (tournaments & some quads), some only one wrestler (duals).  If we have more than one kid in a weight, we’ll have to have a wrestle off to determine who the ‘varsity’ kid at that weight is.  We will wrestle at NVWF events when they don’t conflict with CAWL events.  If there is a CAWL event where we can only enter one kid per weight, the number two wrestler will go to the NVWF event.

Equipment:  We’ve purchased new singlets for our CAWL team.  We will wear purple and gray singlets with a ‘lighting’ bolt on the front, with ‘CHARGERS’ across the chest.  We will issue them to the number one kid at each weight.  Your wrestler should order the “SPIRIT WEAR PACKAGE” or the “WARMUP” Package.  Everyone will wrestle with headgear.  We’ll issue them too.  If your wrestler is the number two kid at his weight and we’re wrestling a CAWL event where we can enter two kids at a weight, he’ll wear is NVWF singlet.  If our number one kids are wrestling in an NVWF event, they will wear their NVWF singlet, not their CAWL singlet (don’t make yourself a target).  You will be required to pay one equipment deposit- $45 per wrestler no matter that your wrestler is competing in both NVWF and CAWL.  Failure to turn in any item (Headgear, NVWF, or CALW Singlet) will result in forfeiture of your equipment deposit at the end of the season.

Communications:  I will email items that only apply to our CAWL wrestlers directly to you and post that information on the CAWL page on our WWW site.

Schedule:  We will host at least one quad, maybe two.  Most of the events will be in Maryland , since that’s where a majority of the CAWL clubs are located.

Coach Arnold and I will send emails to parents of wrestlers that we’ve identified as potential members of our Beltway team. Once our season begins in November we will devise a ‘wrestle off’ system where anyone can challenge for a spot on the Beltway team.
