The CYA Youth Wrestling Program particpiates in two (2) Leagues:
-
The NVWF is a developmental league where beginner wrestlers:
-
are introduced to the sport of wrestling
-
get a chance to execute the moves they have learned in practice against opponents of comparable ability
-
wrestle against opponents of the same age and same weight (+/- 3 to 5 pounds)
-
as a general rule, get 3 competitive matches each weekend throughout the season
-
the first tournament is on December 11th or 12th and ends with the Regional Tournament March 5th or 6th
-
The CAWL is a competitive league of experienced wrestlers:
-
This is our ’select’ wrestling team consisting of 19 weight classes (each wrestler will be chosen for CAWL)
-
Multiple wresters per weight class (where applicable) will be chosen
-
Wrestle-offs will happen throughout the season to determine the line-ups each week
-
The coaches make the final decision on who wrestles each week
-
This is comparable to a travel Basketball, Soccer or American Football Team
-
We will travel to Maryland and throughout Virginia to compete
-
Meets are run exactly like High School meets and follow High School rules
-
The CAWL season officially starts in January and ends in early March with a Championship Tournament and VA/MD States

Please be sure to label your wrestlers clothes and apparel.
What to Wear to Practice: T-shirt, shorts, Headgear and Wrestling shoes. Purchase your wrestling shoes and headgear well in advance to be sure you have them for the first practice. There are several online sources as well as area Sporting Goods stores. Some CYA Wrestlers may have shoes that they have outgrown and are willing to sell - let Rich Carlson (email:
jazzrunnerrc@yahoo.com) and Rick Arnold (email:
rick@rarnold.com) know if your looking or have shoes and/or headgear to sell.
All wrestler’s are requried to wear HEADGEAR in practice and all competition (both NVWF & CAWL). This was a new rule for the 2008-2009 wrestling season and is a safety precaution.
SINGLETS: CYA provides singlets for competition. We will issue them before our intersquad meet planned (to be determined). SINGLETS ARE NOT TO BE WORN TO PRACTICE.
HEADGEAR: All wrestlers are required to wear headgear in competition- CYA Wrestling will not furnish headgear or shoes, so please make plans to get your own.
WRESTLING SHOES: All wrestlers are required to wear wrestling shoes in practice and meets. No tennis shoes are allowed. As a sfety precaution against communicable disease, no street shoes will be allowed on the mats in the wrestling practice room or during tournaments and meets. Wrestling Shoes are to worn on the mat only. Any wrestler wearing shoes outside will not be allowed on the mat with those shoes. Purchase your shoes now, before the season starts.
Each wrestler is responsible for replacement cost of their singlet - replacement cost for singlets is $100.
Equipment Deposit: Each wrestler will provide a deposit (check) of $100 for singlets issued by CYA Wrestling. When the singlet is returned at the end of the season, the deposit check will be returned. If singlets are not returned by a date announced at the end of the season, deposit checks will be cashed.
CYA Wrestling Clothing: Each wrestler will recieve a free t-shirt with their registration - we put a different ’slogan’ on the back each year. We also offer a Spirit Wear Pak for our wrestler’s to wear to tournaments. We do not use this as a revenue generating program- we offer these items at cost. Our aim is to fill the stands with ’purple.’

We will take one order for delivery in December before our duals and tournaments begin.
