Referees
Winter 2012-13 and Spring 2013

CYA Basketball uses volunteer referees to officiate games in the Winter program for Grades 2-8 and in the Spring program for Grades 4-8. Volunteers can be either adults or youth aged 13 and above. Winter games generally begin mid December and Spring games at the beginning of April.

Volunteer referees are paid between $10-$25 per game, depending upon experience and the age level of those playing in the game. Whistles and uniform shirts will be provided. Experienced officials are also needed for our mentoring program and will be paid to work with our newer referees.

In order to officiate for the CYA basketball program you must be at least 13 years of age and have attended the mandatory training sessions held on October 27th, 2012. If you have any questions please contact the Referee Coordinator, Monica Despins, at despinsm@yahoo.com.

NOTE: Games for grades 9-12 (Boys and Girls) are officiated by semi-professional referees provided by the Cardinal Basktball Officiating Association.

Sportsmanship Issues
Reporting
All instances of poor sportsmanship displayed by any player, coach, official, or spectator as well as all behavior-related technical fouls must be reported to CYA Basketball within 48 hours of the game or event.

Any displays of poor sportsmanship can be reported to CYA Basketball by anyone (officials, coaches, players, or spectators). However, reports are required from at least one referee and both coaches in the following situations:
  • Yellow or red card issued by CYA House referees for unsportsmanship behavior

  • Technical fouls (except administrative technical fouls) issues by CYA House referees or Cardinal referees

The Incident Report form on the left side of this page should be used if possible to report such behavior.  Completed incident forms should be sent to Referee Coordinator, Monica Despins (despinsm@yahoo.com) or to the Sportsmanship Coordinator, Rein Kiewel (Rein.Kiewel@verizon.net) and to the league administrator for the league involved or the Boys/Girls Commissioner. If the behavior warrants further investigation and possible disciplinary action, then the issue will be referred to the CYA Basketball Sportsmanship Committee.
