Girls Travel Program (Winter 2012-13)
Program Summary
In our Winter program, CYA offers those players with a higher skill level an opportunity to participate in the county-wide Fairfax County Youth Basketball League (commonly known as Travel or Select). Travel coaches are re-selected each summer through an interview procress. During tryouts held in early October, the coaches select 10-11 players per team from among all those who participate in at least 2 tryouts. The number of teams per grade is determined by the talent available at tryouts (with a maximum of 3 teams per grade). Practice begins as soon as the teams are selected. This program requires a greater time commitment from participants for practice (2-3 hours per week) and games (1-2 per week); most games are played at gyms across Fairfax County (often outside the Chantilly area) and in Falls Church, Arlington, or Alexandria.

NOTE: The travel teams are now grade-based rather than age-based as in the past. This means anyone in the designed grade can participate as long as they are not more than 2 years older than others in that grade as of 1 September (for example, no player on the 6th grade team can be 13 as of 1 September). There are no more age exceptions. All players will be expected to provide documentation of their current grade along with a DMV ID once selected to a team.

Girls programs are offered at grade 5 (formerly 10 and under), grade 6 (formerly 11 and under), grade 7 (formerly 12 and under), and grade 8 (formerly 14 and under).  Ninth graders are no longer permitted on the 8th grade team, regardless of age. In addition, all CYA players must reside in Fairfax County and, by FCYBL rules, are limited to our allocated zip codes (22033, 20151, 20171, 22124, and 20120), with 2 zip code exceptions allowed per team.

Note that FCYBL also strictly limits the number of players in 4th grade or below who can be selected to the 10 and under teams. For that reason, a separate qualifying tryout will be held for 4th graders prior to the 5th grade tryouts; at this 4th grade tryout, a limited number of players will then be invited to participate in the 5th grade tryouts.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Online registration for the Winter 2012-13 season will begin in mid-September 2012 (accessed through the link in the top left corner of the main CYA web page, www.chantillyyouth.org). Fees are yet to be determined for 2012-13. The registration deadline for Travel basketball is October 1st in order for CYA to conduct tryouts and select the teams the first two weeks of October. After October 1st, individuals can still try out for Travel teams by attending at least 2 of the tryouts but they will have to register for House (if they make a travel team, their registration will be switched to Travel). All those trying out for Travel must be registered for either House or Travel by the second night of tryouts for their age-level. If a player does not make a Travel team, they will automatically be moved to the House program.
If you have any questions, please contact the new Travel program coordinator, David Posz, at dposz@poszlaw.com.
